Barking Deer hunting Borneo

Borneo Jungle in the Kelabit Highlands, Sarawak a few hours hike from Pa Lungan. Tagging along on a morning hunt with our guide, hunter & local parish priest, Steve. Using a doubled over leaf he makes a call which lures in the deer rather than actively stalking them. There is always a slight movement of air below the canopy and its important which way our scent carries. You’ll see him test this with a lighter. After several attempts a female barking deer came bounding out of the jungle directly towards us and was felled with a precise neck shot from near point blank range. It was butchered on the spot, packed up and taken back to the village and was the source of many dinners and smiles all round.

Your idiotic and mindless hunting is causing extermination of this species in addition to causing catastrophic disturbance of other species within the forest. Do you know Sarawak has exceptionally low species diversity compared to neighboring states because of hunting?! Probably not.
